The second issue of Son and Foe will be out, barring further complications, on 2/6/06 (monday)–which isn’t too bad. I was originally shooting to keep up the Sunday update pattern, and releasing it on the 5th. Again, our second issue will consist of a few articles, the complete The Spriggan Mirror by Lawrence Watt-Evans, and One State Two State by the Light Footwork.
An entirely new magazine site will debut with the issue; it will mostly look “similar,” but the underlying system that controls it all will be moved from hand-coded PHP and HTML to WordPress, which is simple to adapt to a complete CMS.
Aside from the archive (new) and the store (new), there will also be a new section to the Son and Foe Network, which is now up and running here. The new site details various services Son and Foe can now offer, from editing short story manuscripts to hosting Son and Foe blogs. The primary goal of the Services section is to help fund the magazine; all of the money generated from it goes directly to pay for extra content in the magazine. So, in a way, it’s how interested people can donate to the magazine, and get a little something back in return. All of the services are priced extremely reasonably; go check it out for details.
There is a music service called Pandora that allows you to enter songs that you like, and it finds other songs that it thinks you’ll like. Son and Foe has a pandora station you can check out and listen to (new); of course, you’ll likely want to stop listening rather quickly, and make your own station. Remember to add single songs, one at a time, and stay away from adding artists. The service adds songs it “thinks” you’ll like to the station a bit too liberally, and pointing it in the wrong direction can take a long time to get straightened out.
Also, I’ve been hard at work, and the upcoming two issues have albums lined up for bundling, as well.
There are three or four items in the slush that are about a week or so over the 30-day limit: we’re still considering your stories, but getting the issue out on time is taking priority right now.
So that’s where things stand! Hopefully soon we can get back to posting things that are more interesting to a general audience. Like about how my eggs were stolen from me.
