Just finished “Quality Time” and, if you haven’t looked at it yet, I highly recommend that you stop reading the blogs and go read it immediately.
Admittedly, I’m partial to stories that successfully mash horrific elements and humor together in one long heart-rending, chortling nightmare and this piece does that well. Somehow, the funniness in Quality Time enhances the tragic aspects of the story and there’s definitely an art to that.
But don’t get the wrong idea – “Quality Time” isn’t all giggles and tears. There’s romance too. Which reminds me; I loved the switch of scene in the second paragraph from swaying breasts to a cloud of insects.
I also loved the paragraph with the line that goes: What if he stepped on a butterfly and wiped out his pathetically meager investment portfolio? Inspired!
Other things I appreciated about “Quality Time”: Brian’s discussion with his own reflection in a pair of mirrored sunglasses, Dr. Fishlove, and the protagonist’s “clinical attitude about insect life”.
More than anything, I’m left with a certainity that I wouldn’t want to time travel. The sacrifice seems huge.

Very glad to hear you liked “Quality Time.” I thought it was pretty damn solid, too, and a good way to open up the issue.
