Chapter Three
summary/excerpt
Gresh sat at his kitchen table across from Twilfa and Tira, stroking his short-trimmed beard. “She said they’d tried wizardry, theurgy, demonology, warlockry, science, and ritual dance. She didn’t mention witchcraft, but since she’s a witch herself I think we can take that for granted.”

“Then why did you want me here?” Tira asked.

Chapter three of the novel The Spriggan Mirror by Lawrence Watt-Evans, published in Son and Foe issue #2.

Chapter Two
summary/excerpt
Once Dina was safely on her way with a fresh bottle of blood, Gresh locked and re-sealed the vault, closed the front door, and settled on the other velvet chair. He watched as Twilfa slipped out the back, then turned to focus on his customer.

“Now, my dear, if you could explain to me what you know of this mirror, I will consider whether or not I can obtain it for you.”

Chapter One
summary/excerpt
Gresh was yawning, still not entirely awake, when the bell jingled and the just-unlocked door of his shop opened behind him, letting in a swirl of cold air. He blinked once more, flexed his shoulders, and started to turn.

“Don’t you ever sleep?” his eldest sister’s voice demanded.

When the Great Clod Belches
summary/excerpt
“Bamboo flute,” Christopher says, reaching out a hand, palm open, five fingers splayed. His assistant, a short-haired brunette in a nurse’s uniform, rushes in and hands him an evil looking pair of pliers. “Open,” he says to me. I am scared but I smile, because the assistant flashes me when Christopher isn’t looking.

A flash fiction retelling of a much older story. First published in Son and Foe issue #1.

The Man Who Knew Somebody
summary/excerpt
I don’t know anybody famous myself, although when I was very young, I saw Hubert Humphrey at a shopping center. Or maybe it was Richard Nixon. A lot of people were there to see him, and Humphrey, or Nixon, worked the crowd, smiling and shaking hands with both of his own, protected by bodyguards, propelled by his handlers, rushing past us to make the next crowd at the next shopping center. I didn’t actually get to shake either of his hands, but I was only separated from him by a fat lady with a fox stole and another lady who smelled like garlic so it was a really close thing.

A flash fiction story that explores the pitfalls of glory days, particularly other people’s. First published in Son and Foe issue #1.

Super-Villains
summary/excerpt
In the beginning, the Wing had worn leotards and a cape. Then he dropped the cape and replaced the leotards with leather. The thick, body-protecting rubber armor he favored now was sculpted to resemble the physical definition he’d had naturally in youth, but found impossible to maintain as he aged. He did not mourn the loss; with age came experience. Fighting skills and acrobatics, he discovered after years of lessons learned the hard way, were the least of his crime-fighting tools.

No matter the uniform, though, he’d always worn the same mask. The mask defined him. He felt most alive when, as now, he wore the mask and glided above his beloved Excelsior City.

A novella about growing old and fighting crime. First published in Son and Foe issue #1.

Sailing Off the Edge of the World
summary/excerpt
In the front rows the scribes are scribbling; in the back, a guilty susurrus of newspapers. Outside, the sky begins to clear. A ray of afternoon sun finds its way through the high chalky windows and laces Penderson’s wrist. He is warmed. He feels something that could be defined as pleasure, and his language grows more eloquent.

“Rationale…exegesis…epiphany…exacerbate!”

A flash fiction story about a man who dreams of escaping the ivory tower. First published in Son and Foe issue #1.
